EXCLUSIVE: Intense drama [pictured] starring Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa premieres in Cannes on Friday.

Memento Films International (MFI) has been racking up sales on Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s Paris-set melodrama The Past and is expecting to close a number of big territories following its premiere in competition this evening.

The intense drama, starring Bérénice Bejo, Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa, is Oscar-winning Farhadi’s first French language picture.

To date, the film has sold to Benelux (Cineart), Switzerland (Frenetic), Israel (Lev Cinemas), Portugal (Alambique), Greece (Seven Group), Turkey (Mars Production), Poland (Kino Swiat), Latin America (California Filmes), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), South Korea (Mirovision), Taiwan (Maison Motion), Australia(Madman), Middle East (Falcon) and Penny Black has picked it up for airlines.

A handful of big territories, including the UK and Germany, have been held back until after the screening.

Lead produced by Alexandre Mallet-Guy of Memento, the picture is a co-production with France 3 Cinema and Italian Bim Distribuzione. Memento Films Distribution will release the picture in France in 335 cinemas on May 17.
