EXCLUSIVE: French distributor picks up David Mackenzie’s prison-drama.

Wild Side has pre-bought French rights to David Mackenzie’s prison-drama Starred Up from UK sales outfit Independent.

Currently in post-production, Skins and 300: Rise of an Empire star Jack O’Connell plays a a violent teenager who is transferred to an adult prison where he meets his match in the shape of his father.

Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend co-star in the story from Jonathan Asser. Sigma Films produces with backing from both Film4 and Creative Scotland.

The deal was negotiated by Abigail Walsh for Independent and Manuel Chiche for Wild Side.

The film is Perfect Sense, Hallam Foe and Young Adam director Mackenzie’s eighth film.

Walsh commented: “Starred Up is David’s most powerful and daring film to date. It packs a real emotional punch. We are delighted that Wild Side have come on board at this early stage. Their taste and sensibility make them a perfect partner for a film of this quality.”
