The Case Against 8 won the top jury and audience documentary awards, while Ida prevailed in the narrative feature, screenplay and actress honours as the 16th annual RiverRun International Film Festival came to a close (13) in North Carolina.

“Films showcased at our festival this year reflected diverse stories from around the world, immense talent from directors and a host of passionate projects that are jewels of the independent filmmaking community,” said RiverRun executive director Andrew Rodgers.

All in all the festival screened 144 films from 33 countries and ran from April 4-13.

The winners are as follows:

AUDIENCE AWARDS

The Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature: Philippe Muyl’s Nightingale (China-France).

The Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature: Ryan White, Ben Cotner’s The Case Against 8 (US).

Altered States Award for Best Indie: James E Duff’s Hank And Asha (US-Czech Republic).

JURY AWARDS – NARRATIVE COMPETITION

The Best Narrative Feature Award: Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida (Poland-Denmark).

The Peter Brunette Award for Best Director: Marcel Said, The Summer Of Flying Fish (Chile-France).

Best Actor: Néstor Guzzini, Tanta Agua (Uruguay-Mexico-Netherlands-Germany.

Best Actress: Agata Kulesza, Ida (Poland-Denmark).

Best Cinematography: Inti Briones, The Summer Of Flying Fish (Chile-France).

Best Screenplay: Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida (Poland-Denmark).

A Special Jury Prize was presented to: Sébastien Betbeder’s 2 Autumns, 3 Winters (France).

Best Documentary Feature: Ryan White, Ben Cotner’s The Case Against 8 (US)

Best Director: Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez, Manakamana (Nepal-US)

The Human Rights Award: Dan Krauss’ The Kill Team (US)

JURY AWARDS – SHORTS COMPETITION

Best Documentary Short: Konrad Kästner’s Cathedrals (Kathedralen) (Germany).

Cathedralsis now eligible to be considered for a 2015 Academy Award.

A special Jury Prize was presented to A Hole In The Sky (Godka Cirka) (US-Spain).

Best Narrative Short: Joseph Esteban Alenda’s Inertial Love.

A special Jury Prize for visual ingenuity was presented to Erik Schmitt’s Rhino Full Throttle (Germany).

A special Jury Prize for emotional authenticity was presented to Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson’s Whale Valley (Denmark).

Best Animated Short: Santiago “Bou” Grasso’s Padre (Argentina).

A special jury prize went to Nadia Micault’s Sonata.

Best Student Narrative Short: Miklas Manneke’s Kanyekanye (South Africa).

Best Student Documentary Short: Alex Lora’s A Hole In The Sky (Godka Cirka) (US).

Best Student Animated Short: Ana Caro’s The Magnificent Lion Boy (UK).

An honorable mention went to Jacob Streilein’s Punctuwool (US).

The festival is supported by the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County.
