AFI Fest 2011 organisers have unveiled the selections from the Young Americans and New Auteurs strands as well as the films in the Joe Swanberg tribute. The festival is set to run from Nov 3-10.

Young Americans features work by emerging US filmmakers such as Clay Liford’s Wuss, Tristan Patterson’s Dragonslayer and Sophia Takal’s Green.

New Auteurs focuses on first and second-time directors from around the world and among the entries are Markus Schleinzer’s Michael, Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg and Julia Loktev’s The Loneliest Planet.

The 2011 edition of AFI FEST will also mark the debut of a jury-selected New Auteurs Critics Prize, which will be awarded to one film in this section.

The Swanberg spotlight will screen the multi-hyphenate’s Full Moon Trilogy of Silver Bullets, Art History and The Zone.

“The filmmakers in the Young Americans and New Auteurs sections have bold new stories to tell and they are telling them in ways that are unexpected – these are filmmakers who are taking risks,” AFI FEST director Jacqueline Lyanga said.

“And Joe Swanberg, whose intimate stories challenge conventionality, is one of the most prolific young independent filmmakers in America. He’s made five films just this past year, three of which we’ll be showing at AFI FEST.”
