Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s Birdman will close the 52nd New York Film Festival, set to run from September 26-October 12.

NYFF hierarchy did not say whether the black comedy would receive its North American or US premiere, given that the world premiere screening will open Venice Film Festival on August 27.

That leaves open the likely possibility that Birdman will receive its North American premiere at Toronto, which begins to announce programming this week.

Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts star in Birdman, which marks the third film by Iñárritu to screen at NYFF after Amores Perros at NYFF in 2000 and 21 Grams in 2003.

The Fox Searchlight Pictures and New Regency release is scheduled to open in the US on October 17.

As previously announced, NYFF will open with Gone Girl and Inherent Vice is the Centrepiece Gala.
