Leos Carax’s surreal drama won the international competition Gold Hugo for best film and Silver Hugos for best actor Denis Lavant and cinematographers Yves Cape and Caroline Champetier. 

The Silver Hugo special jury prize went to Michel Franco’s After Lucia while the Silver Hugo for best actress went to Ulla Skoog for Jan Troell’s In The Last Sentence and special mention went to The Repentant.

In the New Directors Competition for first and second features receiving their US premiere, Petér Bergendy’s The Exam took the Gold Hugo and Zdenek Jirasky’s Flowerbuds claimed the Silver Hugo.

Clayton Brown and Monica Long Ross’s The Believers won the Docufest Competition’s Gold Hugo and Dana Doron and Uriel Sinai’s Numbered took the Silver Hugo.

In the After Dark section, Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral claimed Gold Hugo honours while the Silver Hugo went to Jaume Balagueró’s Sleep Tight.

Gold Hugo short film honours went to Return from Shay Levi and the Silver Hugo was presented to Adam Bizanski for Paul.

The best of the programme will screen on Oct 24 and the festival ends on Oct 25 with a closing night gala presentation of Flight starring Denzel Washington.
