Armando Iannucci’s political satire In The Loop will open the 20th edition of the Emden-Norderney International Film Festival (June 10-17).

The German festival, whic has developed as a popular showcase for new British and Irish cinema, will also have German premieres of Michael Winterbottom’s Genova, Steve McQueen’s Hunger, Kenny Glenaan’s Summer, and Aislin Walsh’s The Daisy Chain.

The films are also in competition for the Bernhard Wicki Award, alongside  Nicolas Saada’s Espion(s), Erik van Looy’s Loft, Juan Carlos Tabio’s Horn Of Plenty.

The festival will also host world premieres of Marie Reich’s Summertime Blues and Ali Samadi Ahadi’s Salami Aleikum.

To mark the festival’s 20th anniversary, the festival will also have a retrospective of work by Bristol’s Aardman Animations with screenings of the studio’s feature films and selected shorts. Head animator Will Becher and screenwriter Mark Burton will be at the festival to talk about life behind the scenes at the company.

The event will also host a selection of films from its new festival partner at Norway’s Haugesund, which is also Emden’s twin town. The festival programme will show Erik Poppe’s Troubled Water, Rune Denstad Langlo’s North, and Stian Kristiansen’s The Man Who Loved Yngve.
