The festival that grew up with the Romanian New Wave will celebrate its 10th birthday with more films, more cash and more stars

The Transilvania International Film Festival will present Michael York with a Lifetime Achievement Award. York will attend the festival along with Lech Majewski in support of the Polish director’s Sundance title The Mill And The Cross, screening in the festival’s No Limit selection.

Other guests include Marin Karmitz, the Romanian-born French producer and founder of MK2; cinematographer Oleg Mutu; Swedish actress Pernilla August, who will present her directorial debut, Beyond in the Supernova selection.

The festival’s signature Romanian Days selection of new local films and co-productions includes 12 features and documentaries, among them three world premieres (Gabriel Achim’s Adalbert’s Dream, George Dorobanţu’s Bucharestless and Lucian Georgescu’s The Phantom Father) and Cătălin Mitulescu’s Un Certain Regard title Loverboy.

The program of the festival’s 2011 edition features 220 titles — 184 features — from 45 countries. Twelve feature films are contending for the Transilvania Trophy in the festival’s international competition. The cash award offered to the grand prize winner has increased from €10,000 to €15,000. The local industry is represented in the main competition by Constantin Popescu’s San Sebastian title Principles Of Life.

Other high-profile competition films include Rúnar Rúnarsson’s feature debut, Volcano, which will have its world premiere in the Directors Fortnight at Cannes. Valdis Oskarsdottir returns to the festival with King’s Road. Oskarsdottir first feature, Country Wedding, screened in competition in Cluj in 2009.

The competition jury includes French exhibitor Laurence Herszberg, Serb producer Cedomir Kolar, Italian director Uberto Pasolini and Romanian director Radu Muntean.

The 10th Transilvania International Film Festival takes place June 3–12 in Cluj-Napoca and June 15–19 in Sibiu.
