Rome to host world premiere of project by Kaurismaki, Costa, Erice and de Oliveira

Artist Douglas Gordon to serve as jury president of CinemaXXI.

The Rome Film Festival’s new CinemaXXI section, devoted to new trends in international cinema, will open with the world premiere of Centro Historico, a film jointly directed by Aki Kaurismäki, Pedro Costa, Victor Erice, and Manoel de Oliveira.

The film was developed as part of the Guimaraes [pictured] 2012 European Capital of Culture projects in Portugal. Kaurismaki directs part one, O Tasqueiro, about a lonely barman in the Guimaraes city center; Costa takes on part two Lamento da Vida Jovem, returning to the character of Cape Verdean Ventura; Erice handles part three Vidros Partidos, about a former textile mill and its employees; and de Oliveira delivers O Conquistador, Conquistado, about tourists visiting Guimaraes.

Also, the festival announced that Turner Prize-winning artist Douglas Gordon will head the jury for CinemaXXI.

The revamped Rome Film Festival, in its first edition under Marco Mueller, will run Nov 9-17.
