London spin-off will move from April to June for the 2016 edition.

Sundance Film Festival London

The 4th Sundance Film Festival: London is to run June 10-12, 2016 when it moves to the newly launched Picturehouse Central near London’s Leicester Square.

The UK offshoot of the Sundance Film Festival had run for three years, from 2012 to 2014, in late April and was hosted at the O2 arena in east London. But this year’s edition was cancelled as the Sundance Institute decided to “explore our options for Sundance London”.

On its return next year, the festival will again feature the international and UK premieres of films from Sundance, held in January in Park City, Utah.

The dates mean that Sundance London will run at the same time as Sheffield Doc Fest (June 10-15) and end three days before the Edinburgh International Film Festival gets underway (June 15-26).

John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, said: “Building on our 30-year legacy of discovery and creativity, the Sundance Film Festival: London gives us the opportunity to share new independent films we love with adventurous and engaged audiences in the UK.

“Our new timing in June will allow us to connect with London filmgoers as they start their summer, and also to take advantage of the fantastic rooftop space of our new host venue, the very impressive Picturehouse Central.”

Clare Binns, director of programming and acquisitions at Picturehouse, said: “Picturehouse’s flagship new Central London venue is all about celebrating a diverse, rich film culture from around the world, so it’s absolutely apt that we play host to the Sundance Film Festival: London next year.

“To showcase the very best movies from one of the leading festivals in the world will be a truly great experience for us and for London’s cinephiles. Bring it on.”

The first three editions, under the banner Sundance London, featured the international and UK premieres of films including Fruitvale StationObvious ChildFrankThe Trip to ItalyThe Queen of VersaillesBlackfishUpstream Color and The Look of Love.

The festival was attended by filmmakers, artists and supporters including HRH The Prince of Wales, Michael Fassbender, Gemma Arterton, Ryan Reynolds, Gina Rodriguez, Lake Bell, Jimmy Carr, the Eagles, Peaches, David Cross, Rose McGowan, Minnie Driver and Rufus Wainwright.
