UPDATE: The distributor plans a theatrical release later this year after rights holder Submarine brokered a North American sale earlier this week with Magnolia Pictures and CNN Films. Meanwhile talks were intensifying on S-VHS and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s documentary charts the history of orcas in captivity and focuses on a fatal attack on a Sea World trainer.
David Koh, Dan Braun and Josh Braun of Submarine Entertainment negotiated the rights on behalf of the producers with Paul Wiegard and Paul Tonta of Madman Entertainment.
Cowperthwaite produced with Manuel Oteyza and Judy Bart, Erica Kahn, and Rick Brookwell served as executive Producers.
Earlier in the festival Submarine and Madman concluded a deal for Australia and New Zealand rights to The Summit.
- A deal was understood to be drawing closer on Park City At Midnight entry S-VHS, with Magnolia and Lionsgate both circling. Magnolia’s Magnet label distributed the film’s predecessor and Sundance 2012 horror V/H/S. Talks on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints were also proceeding with a posse of suitors belived to include Magnolia, IFC, Roadside Attractions and SPC.
