The Weinstein Company capped a fine day following the 13-strong haul of Oscar nominations as it acquired worldwide rights to Jacob Aaron Estes’ Sundance Premieres entry The Details.

The company paid $7.5m plus a minimum $10m p+a guarantee after COO David Glasser, acquisitions head Peter Lawson and evp of legal affairs Laine Kline closed the deal with CAA and UTA on behalf of the filmmakers. 

Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Ray Liotta star in the dark comedy about a man who trying to hold on to his marriage while beset by aggressive raccoons, extortion and a crazy cat lady. Mark Gordon, Hagai Shaham and Bryan Zuriff produced and Mickey Liddell and Jennifer Hilton served as executive producers.

Earlier in the day SPC took US and Latin American rights to action-comedy The Guard, which became an early Sundance favourite immediately after last week’s opening night screening. John Michael McDonagh directed the police buddy filmstarring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle. UTA’s Rena Ronson and David Flynn and Metropolis Film Sales brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers with SPC.

Meanwhile Lionsgate, Relativity and Summit were understood to be circling Lee Tamahori’s The Devil’s Double featuring an acclaimed performance by Dominic Cooper.

Intense interest had also coalesced around Mike Cahill’s feature directorial debut Another Earth starring Brit Marling, another young actor whose impact has sent ripples through the festival.

Buyers were preparing to descend on Jose Padilha’s stirring crime thriller Elite Squad 2 last night [25] and several acquisitions executives were already in pursuit. The film will screen in Panorama in Berlin next month and is the biggest Brazilian box office hit in history on approximately $70m. Gersh represents North American rights and IM Global handles foreign sales. IFC released Elite Squad in the US in 2008.
