TIFF confirms 146 world premieres; Toronto Discovery selections include Brass Teapot, Wasteland, Call Girl

The Toronto International Film Festival has added 27 features, including 14 world premieres, in its Discovery programme devoted to first or second features.

Some highlights among the world premieres include Pablo Berger’s Blananieves, an update of Snow White transported to the matador community in 1920s Spain; Ramaa Mosley’s satire The Brass Teapot starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano; Mikael Marcimain’s Swedish 1970s-set political thriller Call Girl starring Pernilla August; Rola Nashef’s cross-cultural story Detroit Unleaded; US 2012 election story Janeane from Des Moines by Grace Lee; French fiction-documentary hybrid Nights with Theodore; Australian Aboriginal story Satellite Boy, and UK heist story Wasteland, directed by 2011 Screen Star of Tomorrow Rowan Athale.

The selections are eligible for two awards: the new Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award (with a $10,000 cash prize to support the winner’s next project), and the juried FIPRESCI Prize for the Discovery programme.

“North American audiences have first found films like Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg and Steve McQueen’s Hunger in our Discovery programme,” said Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival. “With another strong crop of films this year and two prizes specifically for Discovery filmmakers, Toronto continues to be a prime place for debut films.”

Also, the TIFF Kids programme has added the world premiere of Vincent Bal’s Nono The ZigZag Kid.

With these additions today, TIFF confirms that it will present a total of 289 features, of which 146 are world premieres. That compares to 2011’s 122 world premieres of 269 features. The films come from 72 countries (up from 65). This year’s submissions tallied 4,143 up from 3,461 in 2011. The number of first features jumps from 61 to 75.
