Toronto adds 7 more world premieres including features by Millet, O'Nan, Petersen

Toronto has unveiled the final selections for this year’s programme. In total, the festival has now programmed 336 films, including 268 features (that compares to last year’s 339 and 258) representing 65 countries (up from 59).

There were a total of 3,461 submissions.

In the Discovery programme, for first and second features, the lineup of 25 films includes world premieres of Avalon by Axel Petersén (Sweden), The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best by Ryan O’Nan (US), Bunohan by Dain Said (Malaysia), Romain’s Circuit by Sebastian Brahm (Chile/Argentina), Lost In Paradise by Ngoc Dang Vu (Vietnam), and Twiggy by Emmanuelle Millet (France).

Programmers have also added the world premiere of The Education of Auma Obama by Branwen Okpako (Germany), about President Obama’s half sister, to Reel to Real.

The Masters programme has added new films from the likes of Aki Kaurismaki, Alexander Sokurov, Bela Tarr, and the Dardennes to previously announced Masters titles by Bruce McDonald, Wim Wenders and Jafar Panahi.

In the Masters programme of public conversations, speakers will include Francis Ford Coppola; Tilda Swinton; Deepa Mehta and Salman Rushdie; Christopher Plummer (also presenting the film of Barrymore); Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed (with film The Island President); Albert Maysles (with The Love We Make, plus a pre-recorded intro by Paul McCartney); Neil Young and Jonathan Demme (with Neil Young Life); Sony Pictures Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard; and Tamer Ezzat and Ayten Amin talking about Tahrir Square.
