The story of the legendary Swedish monarch is being structured as a Canada-Nordic co-production produced by Toronto-based Triptych Media, Helsinki-based Marianna Films and German production house Hank Levine Film.
The screenplay has been written by Quebecois playwright and screenwriter Michel Marc Bouchard.
Anna Stratton and Robin Cass are producing for Triptych while Kaurismaki will produce for his company Marianna Films and Hank Levine for his Berlin-based company. Stratton told Screen International that the coproduction partners are in discussions with several international sales companies.
The film is the latest collaboration between Triptych and Bouchard, who penned John Greyson’s Lilies and a number of TV productions.
Filming is scheduled for the winter and spring of 2011 in Canada and Sweden. Distribution start-up Union Pictures, a coventure between Triptych and Sandra Cunningham’s Strada Films, will distribute the picture in Canada.
The part is a juicy one: Kristina was raised as a prince and abdicated the throne under the influence of the French philosopher Rene Descartes. But Polley has a large crown to fill. The role was immortalized by Greta Garbo in the 1933 production Queen Christina directed by Rouben Mamoulian
