TIFF’s unveils works in Wavelengths and Future Projections, including James Franco and Gus Van Sant meditation on My Own Private Idaho.

Dedicated to avant-garde films and video projects, Toronto’s Wavelengths programme is split into five distinctive sections. It will include works by Rose Lowder, James Benning, Nathaniel Dorsky and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Canadian artists/film-makers to be included in the line-up include Mark Lewis, Joyce Wieland, Chris Kennedy, John Price, Blake Williams and Joshua Bonnetta.

“The works in this year’s Wavelengths programme are as timely as ever and point to the present as a crucial time of transition. While the death knell for film has been sounding for ages, its obsolescence can no longer be ignored by film artists whose preferred media (16mm, Kodachrome) are disappearing and no longer available to them as such, there’s a distinctly elegiac tone to this year’s programme, but the laments are matched by a sense of celebration, renewal and regeneration,” said TIFF curator Andréa Picard.

TIFF’s Future Projections programme, free and open to the public, will include this works such as James Franco and Gus Van Sant’s Memories of Idaho project, which is a meditation on My Own Private Idaho in three parts, including one film with excised scenes and alternate takes, as well as large-format photographs of actual Portland, Oregon, street hustlers.

The section also has the North American premiere of Duane Hopkins’ Sunday, a West Midlands-inspired installation that relates to his films such as Better Things; Thierry Guetta, the subject of Exit Through The Gift Shop, presenting his Mr. Brainwash in Toronto as several projects in the city; plus Peter Lynch’s native culture project Buffalo Days.
