The appointment is expected to inject Gallic flair into the festival after Boyer departed his post as artistic director of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight last summer amid acrimony, claiming the French press had attacked his selections before they saw the films.

As artistic director of the Tribeca Film Festival, Boyer will report to TFF executive director Nancy Schafer and Tribeca Enterprises chief creative officer Geoff Gilmore.

“I could not be more honoured and excited to begin this new chapter at Tribeca,” Boyer said. “This festival has matured and developed so impressively from its origins, but there are many more frontiers to explore while keeping the core focus on discovering new voices in filmmaking. I am grateful to Jane, Geoff, Nancy and the entire team for giving me the opportunity to help lead that exploration through the medium of film.”

Boyer’s arrival will allow Gilmore to take on a more active role in overseeing the TFF programme.

Boyer, 52, served two years as artistic director of Directors’ Fortnight. From 2004-08 he was head of its film selection committee. He is the artistic director for Les Arcs European Film Festival at Les Arcs ski resort in the Alps.

Prior to joining Directors’ Fortnight he created and managed Videosphere, the Parisien video store that boasts a library of approximately 60,000 titles.

“The Tribeca Film Festival has always been a platform for a wide spectrum of filmmaking, and Frederic shares our passion and curiosity for film and storytelling,” Tribeca co-founder Jane Rosenthal said. “We know he will make our festival team even stronger, and enhance the Tribeca experience as we enter our second decade.”

Meanwhile Genna Terranova is promoted from senior programmer to director of programming.

Boyer championed first-time filmmakers during his tenure as artistic director of Directors’ Fortnight. When the French Directors Guild (SRF) did not renew his contract, Boyer subsequently claimed he had been the subject of a Franco-French attack. Edouard Waintrop was appointed his successor in July.

The 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival will take place from Apr 18-29 2012 in New York City.
