The acclaimed US filmmaker won Venice’s Golden Lion in 2008 for The Wrestler and is riding high following the $295m worldwide success of Black Swan.

Venice International Film Festival board of directors led by Paolo Baratta made the decision based on a reccomendation by artistic director Marco Mueller.

Aronofsky opened the 67th edition with Black Swan and his credits include The Fountain, Requiem For A Dream and Pi.

The 68th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will run from Aug 31-Sept 10.
