Italian auteur Olmi has already earned a number of major awards, including a Palme d’Or for The Tree Of Wooden Clogs in 1978 and Venice’s Golden Lion for The Legend Of The Holy Drinker in 1988. Like the latter, The Cardboard Village (Il Villaggio Di Cartone) stars Rutger Hauer and explores spirituality. Hauer plays a priest who finds a new mission in life after he sees his church demolished. The film was produced by Luigi Musini of Cinemaundici with Rai Cinema.

One of the big US draws on the Lido, Soderbergh’s high-octane international  thriller about a deadly virus has a high-profile cast that includes Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne.
