The feature debut of Czech director Lunak — whose credits include several rock videos — Alois Nebel is an animated movie set towards the end of the 1980s at a small railway station on the Czech-Poland border. When the local dispatcher, Alois Nebel, begins to see hallucinations of trains from the past, he is sent on a personal journey. Produced by the Czech Republic’s Negativ and Tobogang and Germany’s Pallas Film.

THE CARDBOARD VILLAGE (It)

Italian auteur Olmi has already earned a number of major awards, including a Palme d’Or for The Tree Of Wooden Clogs in 1978 and Venice’s Golden Lion for The Legend Of The Holy Drinker in 1988. Like the latter, The Cardboard Village (Il Villaggio Di Cartone) stars Rutger Hauer and explores spirituality. Hauer plays a priest who finds a new mission in life after he sees his church demolished. The film was produced by Luigi Musini of Cinemaundici with Rai Cinema.

One of the big US draws on the Lido, Soderbergh’s high-octane international  thriller about a deadly virus has a high-profile cast that includes Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne. Produced by Participant Media and Imagenation Abu Dhabi with Double Feature Films and Gregory Jacobs, the film will be released in the US by Warner Bros on September 9.

The Weinstein Company picked up all English-speaking territories to the debut feature from Spanish director Kike Maillo at Cannes this year. Set in 2041, the film is the story of a cyber-engineer seeking to create a child android who discovers something unexpected about his young niece.
