Serenade Films has signed Francois Velle to direct the drama The Narrows, which is set to begin filming in New York later this month.

The Narrows stars Kevin Zegers as a 22-year-old Brooklyn man that dreams of escaping his family's criminal roots and becoming a photographer.

Vincent D'Onofrio, Sophia Bush, Eddie Cahill and Monica Keena also star. Tatiana Blackington adapted the screenplay based on Tim McGloughlin's book Heart Of The Old Country.

Serenade's Leslie Urdang and Michael Nozik will produce with Ami Armstrong of Mr Nice.

'Tatiana has written a beautifully engaging and relevant script, and we're pleased to have such a talented director as Francois to lead our fine cast in telling this story about a man's entry into a violent world and the larger consequences of one's personal choices,' Urdang said.

Velle made his feature directorial film debut on the comedy Comme Des Rois (Kings For A Day). His second feature was the English-language black comedy New Suit inspired by the classic tale The Emperor's New Clothes.

The Narrows marks Serenade's fourth low budget production after Michael Cuesta's Twelve And Holding, Michael Hoffman's Game 6, and Danny Leiner's The Great New Wonderful.
