HBO Documentary Films has acquired US rights to Sweethearts Of The Prison Rodeo directed by Bradley Beesley.

The film is about female convicts who journey to the 2007 Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo.

The feature-length documentary premiered at SXSW in March and will broadcast on HBO’s Cinemax in September. The film will screen in a correctional center in Oklahoma on June 9 and will then become a part of an outreach and educational campaign.

Julie Goldman of New York-based Cactus Three negotiated the deal with HBO. Goldman also executive produced with Krysanne Katsoolis and Caroline Stevens. Producers are James Payne and Amy Dotson.

Beesley’s previous films include Okie Noodling, The Fearless Freaks, and SummerCamp!.

Beesley said: “I’m truly thrilled for the women featured in the film — their remarkable stories made this possible. There’s no better place than HBO to share our documentary with the US - it’s a perfect home.”
