German filmmaker WernerHerzog will be presented with the Hot Docs Outstanding Achievement Award on May5 during the 2006 festival in Toronto.

The occasion will be markedby An Evening With Werner Herzog, a co-presentation of Hot Docs and theCinematheque Ontario. Both organizations will present complimentaryretrospectives gleaned from his more than 40 films, with Hot Docs screening aselection of his documentary work, including last year's acclaimed GrizzlyMan, throughout the duration of the festival (April 28 to May 7)and the Cinematheque presenting selected classic fiction titles such as Aguirre:The Wrath Of God and Fitzcarraldofrom April 29 to May 6.

Hot Docs will also presentQuebecois filmmaker Serge Giguere as the subject of this year's Focus Onprogramme, a mid-career retrospective of a Canadian fllmmaker.Director-cinematographer Giguere's films include Oscar Thiffault (1987), Guy Nadon, Le Roi Du Drum (1991), 9 St-Augustin (1995) and Le Reel Du Megaphone (1999).

Past recipients of theOutstanding Achievement Award include Errol Morris (2005), Michael Maclear(2004), Nick Broomfield (2003), Frederick Wiseman (2002), DA Pennebaker andChris Hegedus (2000) and Albert Maysles (1999).

Hot Docs has also invited2004 Academy Award documentary short nominee Hubert Davis as guest programmer forthe 2006 festival. Davis' nominated film Hardwood premiered at Hot Docs that year. His new short film, Aruba, premieres at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.
