Two Korean hit comedies from 2001, My Sassy Girl and Hi, Dharma!, have been sold to Hollywood studios for English-language remakes.

Korean distributor IM Pictures revealed that DreamWorks SKG has bought remake rights to My Sassy Girl (pictured) for $750,000 plus 4% of worldwide revenues earned by the remake. The film will reportedly be produced by Maverick Films, the film production arm of Madonna's company Maverick.

The story of a gullible college student and his somewhat loopy girlfriend, My Sassy Girl was released in Korea last July by IM Pictures and Cinema Service, grossing $25.8m and outperforming all Hollywood releases in 2001.

In addition, sales company Cineclick Asia has sold rights for the hit film Hi, Dharma! to MGM for a reported $300,000 plus 5% of worldwide revenues. Hi Dharma tells the story of a group of gangsters who hide out in a Buddhist monastery, only to come into conflict with the monks who live there. Released in October, the film earned $19.4m to become the fifth-highest grossing film of the year.

These deals follow last year's sale of remake rights for hit comedy My Wife Is A Gangster, also brokered by Cineclick Asia, to Miramax for a total $1.1m.
