The European Cultural Foundation (ECF) has awarded its Princess Margriet Award to Ghana-born, UK-based filmmaker John Akomfrah.

The award, which comes with a cash prize of €25,000, was given at the Egg in Brussels.

The prize is given annually “to European artists, intellectuals and activists who envisage a truly intercultural landscape and strive for societal change.”

The ECF also honoured Charles Esche, Director of the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands.

The ceremony was attended by the awards’ namesake, HRH Princess Margriet of the Netherlands alongside HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium and ECF’s President HRH Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands.

The evening also showed Akomfrah’s new film project Peripeteia.
