Team GB has chosen Coach Carter as its favourite sports movie of all time, whilst Chariots Of Fire came out top amongst facebook users.

In a bid to get into the Olympic spirit, British Airways commissioned a special survey in which it asked Britain’s Olympic team to vote for its favourite sports film of all time..

Coming in gold with Team GB was Coach Carter, narrowly beating Cool Runnings and Any Given Sunday.

Coach Carter

Directed by Thomas Carter, Coach Carter is based on the real life story of a former student (played by Samuel L Jackson) who returns to his high school to coach the basketball team and to make sure they don’t make the same mistakes as his ex team mates did and end up as college drop outs.

As Coach Carter says in the film: “It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone.” A message that Olmypic organisers will no doubt be hoping people will take away from the games.

Meanwhile, BA’s facebook page users voted for Chariots of Fire an equally inspiring film with another important theme for spectators to take away. Good sportsmanship. The film centres around two male runners competing, not for fame or money, but for internal reasons, one to fight back against the anti-Semitism he has experienced and the other for the glory of God.

Chariots Of Fire

Following the survey, BA will be showing a selection of the winning films on their flights this summer as well as Regan Hall’s Olympic inspired Brit flick Fast Girls, which was released by Studio Canal in the UK earlier this month. And as if that wasn’t enough Olympic action, there will also be a special Olympic inspired menu created by Michelin star chef Simon Hulstone for BA flyers as well as an on-board soundtrack featuring uplifting music and commentary from iconic British moments from previous Games.

Sadly my favourite sports film The Damned United wasn’t in either top tem. It may have something to do with the fact that their aren’t that many football enthusiasts in team GB, or perhaps that the film is set in the 1970s, long before most of Team GB were born!

Regardless of their taste in films, I still want them to do well. Come on team GB!
