Troma plans to Occupy Cannes

Troma is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to produce a documentary entitled Occupy Cannes, which will be filmed at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where Troma will launch its latest production Return To Nuke ‘Em High.

The new doc is a follow-up to 2002’s All The Love You Cannes, which took aim at the media moguls on the Croisette.

The B-movie kingpins said in a statement: “We are the only film studio that has been in the industry for this long and is using crowd-sourcing and social networking in this manner. For almost 40 years Troma has been interactive with our fans who have contributed in many ways.”

The new film will be unveiled at Cannes 2014. The team notes: “Occupy Cannes will not only be an important document for students and lovers of cinema all over the world, but also an irreverent, rebellious, and entertaining motion picture that, like All the Love You Cannes, will have wide appeal.”

The film will be about the cash-strapped indie filmmakers at Troma using low-budget guerrilla marketing techniques as they “fight to survive in a world dominated by the mega media conglomerates; mega media conglomerates who spend more on a party at the Cannes than Troma spends on an entire production.”

Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma, has directed films including The Toxic Avenger, Terror Firmer and Troma’s War and is the author of books such as All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger. Kaufman calls the new doc “an invaluable historic document.”

He and the Troma team are offering rewards for Indiegogo donors (see more here), including signed posters, DVDs, on-screen credits, props, appearances in the doc, a private film premiere, and even a red-carpet visit to Cannes. They hope to raise $50,000.
