Whoopi’s wise words
Three young film-makers - and Screen - met the legendary Whoopi Goldberg in aid of charity Films Without Borders.
Three young film-makers from Rwanda, Israel and Palestine will present their short Things I Learned From Whoopi in Cannes today (3pm, UK tent).
It features the three — Pierre Katiyana, Omri Bezalel and Ismail Al Qaisi — interviewing legendary actress Whoopi Goldberg in London last week. Each of the young film-makers were given the chance to ask her a series of questions about her experiences in the industry, as part of an initiative run by Films Without Borders, a charity set up to support aspiring film-makers from troubled countries (they previously interviewed George Lucas). The boys and Whoopi were then off to Windsor Castle for dinner with Prince Edward.
Screen also had the pleasure of meeting Whoopi in London, where she told us that she was in the process of trying to find a director for a film about a contemporary of Florence Nightingale, who carried out equally pioneering work, but had been largely forgotten. Whoopi will play the lead.
Meanwhile here in Cannes, David Morris Jewellers will be hosting a star studded lunch tomorrow (May 19) to raise awareness for the charity, which is run by film-maker Jill Samuels.
