MGM's swansong release The Amityville Horror opened top of the North American chartsat the weekend, dominating a lackluster weekend as it grossed an estimated$23.3m.

The $19m MGM/Dimension Films picture stars Ryan Reynolds andMelissa George as an ill-fated couple who move into a haunted house. AndrewDouglas directed the remake of the 1979 classic, which drew mostly poorreviews.

In second place was Paramount's adventure Sahara, which added $13.1m for a $36.4m runningtotal., while Fox's romantic comedy Fever Pitch stayed in third on $8.8m for a $23.9mtotal after two weekends.

Dimension's Sin City fell two to fourth on $6.7m for $61.3m, while Columbia's comedy GuessWho rounded out the topfive on $4.9m for $57.6m.

Next weekend's wide releases include Universal's thriller TheInterpreter starringNicole Kidman and Sean Penn; New Line's comedy King's Ransom starring Anthony Anderson; and BuenaVista's romantic comedy A Lot Like Love, which stars Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet.
