Le Havre took Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at last night’s gala ceremony in Helsinki

Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki’s Le Havre may have missed out on this year’s Oscar nominations, but it took its revenge at the Jussi awards ceremony in Helsinki, where the director’s 16th feature left with six (or almost half) prizes, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

At last night’s (Jan 29) gala staged by the Filmiaura organisation, Zaida Bergroth’s family drama The Good Son received three nods while Finnish veteran actress Elina Salo collected both Best Supporting Actress for Le Havre and the Life Achievement Award. Credited with more than 50 films, her best known works are with Kaurismaki.

Starring André Wilms, Kati Outinen and Jean-Pierre Darroussin and shot in French, Le Havre – which is co-produced with Pyramide Productions (France) – is now in the running for the Césars. Last week (Jan 27) it was nominated in three categories: Best Film, Best Director (Kaurismäki) and Best Production Design (Wouter Zoon).

Sold by Germany’s Match Factory, the film won the international critics’ FIPRESCI award at last year’s Cannes. It went on to take top prizes at Germany’s FilmFest München, St Petersburg’s Kinoforum in Russia, the Chicago International Film Festival. Domestically it reached 116,727 admissions, as the second-best local release.
