Maria Schneider was 19 when she starred opposite Marlon Brando in the controversial classic.

Maria Schneider, the French actress who starred in 1972’s Last Tango in Paris, has died at the age of 58.

Her agency said that she died in Paris today after a long illness, but did not elaborate.

She was just 19 when she starred opposite Marlon Brandon in Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial Last Tango In Paris, in which she and Brando improvised a famously racy sex scene.

Her other films include Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger, opposite Jack Nicholson, and Zeffirelli’s Jane Eyre.

Her more recent films included Guillaume Nicloux’s The Key, in 2007 and Josiane Balasko’s Cliente in 2008.
