Swiss-born director Laurent Negre's pan-European film education is translating to his films.

He has enjoyed stints at the Geneva School of Fine Arts, the Catalonia Centre for Cinematographic Studies in Barcelona and at St Lucas Institute in Brussels, and has participated in screenwriting and development workshops at Atelier Grand Nord, Vision Cinema, Drehbuch Forum Wien and Eave.

Set in Barcelona, Negre's second project, Butano, is a comedy chronicling the lives of a group of people from very different backgrounds who all live in the same city. The film's tagline is: 'Life is a gas bottle waiting to explode.'

Selif, a Pakistani petrol-station worker, is the central character around whom all the other characters revolve. Negre describes the film as a 'dark but hopeful comedy' of a society in transition.

Switzerland's Bord Cadre Films and Spain's Tusitala Producciones are co-producing the project which Negre hopes to shoot in Switzerland and Spain.

Bord Cadre produced Negre's first film, Fragile, about an estranged brother and sister reunited following their mother's sudden death.
