Buman most recently served as SPWA vp and played a key role in buying Insidious, Moon, Hannah and Machete, among others.

Buman is the second executive to leave Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) within a week and reunites with FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel in the run-up to Toronto.

She will report directly to president of acquisitions and operations Adrian Alperovich. Buman started her career at IBM and was a business development executive for Schlessel at his consultancy before moving over to be director and subsequently vp of acquisitions at SPWA.

“Lia is an established world class acquisitions executive who understands how to acquire and manage product in order to achieve success,” Alperovich.

“I am very excited to work with everyone at FilmDistrict and to build on the success they have already achieved in this constantly shifting domestic landscape,” Buman added.

FilmDistrict’s upcoming slate includes Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark scheduled to open on Aug 26, Drive on Sept 16, The Rum Diary on Oct 28 and Angelina Jolie’s In The Land Of Blood And Honey on Dec 23.

Last week it emerged that Scott Shooman was leaving SPWA to head acquisitions at CBS Films.
