Lionsgate has picked up North American rights from IEG Virtual Studios to Danny and Oxide Pang's action title Bangkok Dangerous starring Nicolas Cage.

Lionsgate has scheduled a summer release for the US and Canada and Initial will sell international rights here at EFM.

Shot entirely on location in Thailand, the Pang Brothers' remake of their 1999 film of the same name stars Cage as a hitman who develops a conscience when he encounters a Thai girl while on assignment in Bangkok.

Jason Richman wrote the screenplay and Cage produced with his Saturn Films partner and Norm Golightly as well as William Sherak and Jason Shuman of Blue Star Pictures.

'We're excited to become charter members of the Bangkok Dangerous gang, alongside the Pang Brothers, the team at Initial and the tremendous Nicolas Cage,' Lionsgate's Jason Constantine said. 'These are people who know their way around the crime-action genre and who approach it with immense creativity.'

The Pang Brothers' credits include The Messengers, produced by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and released through Sony, and cult horror titles The Eye and The Eye 2.

Lionsgate released the English-language remake of The Eye starring Jessica Alba in North America last weekend.
