Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to Bristol Bay Productions and Playtone Pictures' The Great Buck Howard starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks and Emily Blunt.

The drama about a mentalist who tries to revive his career with the help of a novice road manager was one of the high profile premieres of Sundance that did not initially find a distributor in what turned out to be a muted market in Utah.

Magnolia plans an autumn release for Sean McGinley's film after senior vice president Tom Quinn and head of business affairs Jason Janego negotiated the deal with CAA's Dan Steinman and Bristol Bay's Jim Meenaghan.

Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said The Great Buck Howard was 'a rare find in the current marketplace - a charming, incredibly likeable film that has something for everyone.'
