Veteran Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira began shooting Monday on his latest movie, A Spoken Film (Um Filme Falado), which will feature appearances by Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich and Irene Papas.

The film tells the story of a history professor (Leonor Silveira) and her daughter (Stefania Sandrelli) who embark on a Mediterranean cruise which becomes a journey through history.

A co-production between Paulo Branco's Madragoa Filmes and Gemini Films with Italy's Mikado, the film will shoot for seven weeks in locations ranging from Marseilles and Naples to Athens, Istanbul and Cairo.

At age 94, de Oliveira makes a film every year. His last effort, The Uncertainty Priniciple (O Principio Da Incerteza) (pictured), competed in Cannes and plays this week in the New York Film Festival. Principle opens in Portugal on November 15.
