Buena Vista's National Treasure: Book Of Secrets was the number one domestic film at the close of 2007, capping a record year at the box office that generated $9.7bn according to early estimates and beat by some way the $9.45bn previous best set in 2004.

The adventure sequel added approximately $35.6m in its second weekend and stands at $124m. Overall the top 12 films accounted for $169.2m, which represented an 18% rise over the same weekend last year.

Fox Searchlight's comedy Juno was pound-for-pound the biggest success story of the weekend as it climbed five places to fifth in its fourth weekend on $10.3m to stand at $25.7m.

Another Fox release, the action horror sequel Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem, opened in sixth place on $10.1m over three and $26.9m over five days. Sony's family feature The Water Horse: Legend Of The Deep launched in seventh on a middling $9.2m over three and $1.8m over five.

Buena Vista's Enchanted crossed $100m and ranks 10th on $110.7m after six. The Weinstein Company's awards hopeful The Great Debaters directed by Denzel Washington and released through MGM launched in 11th place on $6.3m over three and $13.5m over five.

Fox's Alvin And The Chipmunks switched places with Warner Bros' I Am Legend and added $30m for $142.2m after three weekends to rank second. I Am Legend ranks third and is poised to cross $200m after the same period of time following a $27.5m weekend haul that raised the tally to $194.6m.

Universal will be pleased with the progress of Charlie Wilson's War, which after two weekends ranks fourth on $34.5m. New Line's The Golden Compass has lacked direction throughout its North American run and ranks 12th on a poor $58.9m after four weekends.
