New Line has acquired English-language remake rights to SantiagoSegura's Spanish hit comedy film series Torrente.

Mike Bender and Doug Chernack will adapt the screenplay to Torrente, fusing story elements from Segura's Torrente:The Dumb Arm Of The Law,Torrente 2: Mission Marbella and Torrente 3: The Protector.

The franchise follows the exploits of a former police officerturned private eye who gets the job done despite being notoriously corrupt anddrunk.

Benderspink is producing and Lola Films' Andres Vicente Gomez andSegura under his Amiguetes Entertainment label will serve as executiveproducers.

New Line production president Toby Emmerich and senior vicepresident of acquisitions and co-productions Guy Stodel will oversee theproject for the studio. Jake Weiner will oversee development for Benderspink.

"Torrente has broken all box office records in Spain," Gomez said."We look forward to having the same success with worldwideaudiences."

"What struck us about the original Spanish film was that thatthe character of Torrente was so immoral, so deplorable, so wrong in so manyways, yet you were still rooting for him." Bender said. "How could Inot want to be a part of something like that'"

Benderspink has previously collaborated with New Line on filmssuch as Just Friendsand The Butterfly Effect.
