The BAFTA-winner boards Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up, joining a cast that already includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright.

Barkhad Abdi (pictured) is set to join the cast of Alcon Entertainment’s Blade Runner sequel.

Abdi won the best supporting actor BAFTA award and earned a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for his debut performance in Captain Phillips. Heappeared this year in Eye in the Sky.

Principal photography on the Blade Runner sequel, whose cast already includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri and Dave Bautista, is scheduled to begin next month. Denis Villeneuve directs, Warner Bros will release in North America and Sony Pictures Releasing International in other territories.

The sequel is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green.

Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, Ridley Scott and Bill Carraro will serve as executive producers.
