Turkish director Mehmet Can Mertoğlu’s Album has won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Feature Film at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival (Aug 12-20).

The comedy, which premiered in Critics’ Week at Cannes in May, follows a middle class Turkish couple who try to cover up the forgery of their family history.

The decision was made by a jury led by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. The award comes with a prize of $18,000 (€16,000).

Album producer Yoel Meranda commented when receiving the award: “Many people here know that most of the stuff that helped this film get made happened in Sarajevo. It started in Sarajevo, and it’s amazing that we have completed this circle.”

Ralitza Petrova’s Godless was awarded two prizes: the Special Jury prize and Best Actress for lead Irena Ivanova.

The Bulgarian-French-Danish drama recently premiered at Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Golden Leopard. It follows a morphine-addicted nurse who traffics the ID cards of demented patients on the black market.

Ivanova commented at the ceremony: “This film will not change the situation in Bulgaria, but I hope it can make people look at themselves and try to change their lives for the better.”

Bogdan Mirică’s Dogs was given a Special Jury Mention, as well as Best Actor for star Gheorghe Visu.

The film premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, winning a FIRPRESCI prize.

Elsewhere, the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Documentary Film went to Monica Lazurean-Gorgan for A Mere Breath, which follows seven years in the life of a Romanian family.

Tarik Hodžić’s Scream For Me Sarajevo won the Special Jury Prize for a documentary, while Berke Bas and Melis Birder’s Baglar was given a Special Jury Mention.

As previously reported, this year’s honorary Heart of Sarajevo awards were given to Robert De Niro, Stephen Frears, and Wolfgang Amadeus Brülhart.

The top prize in the CineLink industry strand, the Eurimages co-production development award, went to the project God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunija from writer-director Teona Mitevska, writer Elma Tataragić and producer Labina Mitevska.
