Paris-based sales outfit adds Marcela Said’s film to Cannes line-up.

Alpha Violet, the independent sales company founded by Virginie Devesa and Keiko Funato, is to handle international sales for Marcela Said’s The Summer of Flying Fish (El Verano de los Peces Voladores).

The feature will receive its world premiere as part of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

It marks Said’s feature debut, having made her name in Chile as a documentary filmmaker.

Produced by Bruno Bettati’s Jirafa Films, it is a coming-of-age story set to the backdrop of a society in turmoil.

The film is co-produced by Tom Dercourt and Sophie Erbs from Cinema Defacto, a Paris-based production company whose recent titles include Pia Marais’ Layla Fourie (Berlinale Competition 2013 - Jury’s special Mention), and Agnes Kocsis’ Pal Adrienn (Un Certain Regard 2011).

It centres on Manena, the teenage daughter of a rich Chilean landowner who devotes his vacations to a single obsession: the extermination of carp fish that invade his artificial lagoon.

As he resorts to more and more extreme methods, Manena experiences her first love, deception and the Mapuche Indian workers who stand up to her father.
