Dibakar Banerjee’s short film, which forms a part of the omnibus Bombay Talkies commemorating 100 Years of Indian Cinema, will be based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Potol Babu Film Star.

“I have taken a contemporary Mumbai setting to tell this intimate, moving human story which is unlike anything I have done so far,” said Banerjee.

The film starts shooting in January and is one of four shorts under 30 minutes each that comprise Bombay Talkies. The other three will be directed by Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar and Zoya Akhtar.

A tribute to Indian cinema, Bombay Talkies is the brainchild of Flying Unicorn Entertainment’s Arshi Dua. Co-produced by Viacom 18, each of the four fictional stories is inspired by cinema and produced on a similar pre-allocated budget.

Dua is hoping the film will release on May 3, 2013. “The first Indian film released on May 3, 1913, which is why we have targeted that date,” said Dua.

Katrina Kaif and Amitabh Bachchan are two of the big stars attached to the shorts by Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap respectively.

The compendium of four shorts, bound together by the music of Amit Trivedi, will release as a complete two-hour long feature length presentation.
