Japanese distributor Bitters End has picked up all rights to Canada-Japan co-production Karakara, directed by Claude Gagnon.

Produced by Takako Miyahira from Japan’s Kukuru Vision and Samuel Gagnon from Canada’s Zuno Films, the film was entirely shot on the islands of Okinawa in the far south of Japan.

The film stars Gabriel Arcand (Congorama) and Youki Kudoh (Memoirs Of A Geisha) in the story of a retired professor who ends up travelling around Okinawa with a runaway wife. Mongrel Media is the Canadian distributor.

Gagnon previously directed Kenny, which received the Grand Prize of the Kinderfest in Berlin, and Kamataki, which received Berlin’s Special Mention of the Jury.

Karakara received financing from Telefilm Cananda, the Okinawa Contents Fund (OFC) and the Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCVB).
