Bollywood actor Shamser Raj Kapoor, known as Shammi Kapoor, died Sunday in a Mumbai hospital after suffering from kidney disease for several years.
He was 79.
Likened to the ‘Elvis Presley of India,’ his heyday was in the 1950s-1960s. He acted in more than 100 films. His debut was in Jeevan Jyoti and other hits included Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Dil Deke Dekho, An Evening In Paris and Junglee.
His father, Prithviraj Kapoor, was also an actor; and brother Shashi Kapoor was also an actor.
On Twitter, Amitabh Bachchan wrote that the with Kapoor’s death the “flamboyance and joie de vivre of the industry is lost”.
Kapoor received the lifetime achievement award at the IIFAs in 2001.
He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan.
