Distribution Workshop drives round Bends
Distribution Workshop is co-financing and has picked up international rights to Flora Lau’s Bends, starring Carina Lau and Chen Kun.
Currently in production, the film revolves around the relationship between a Hong Kong housewife and her driver from mainland China. While the housewife is struggling to keep up appearances following the disappearance of her husband, the driver is figuring out a way to bring his pregnant wife and daughter to Hong Kong.
Nansun Shi is executive producer on the film, which is produced by Melissa Lee and Ken Hui. The crew includes acclaimed production designer William Ching Suk-ping and DoP Christopher Doyle.
First-time feature director Lau developed the project through the Binger Lab and Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Workshop. She previously directed short film Dry Rain, which won best film in the Hong Kong Fresh Wave Short Film Competition at the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival.
Bends has backing from Distribution Workshop, Tomson Group and the Hong Kong Film Development Fund (HKFDC), which aims to support up-and-coming Hong Kong talent.
Distribution Workshop is attending Busan’s Asian Film Market (Oct 8-11) with a slate that also includes David Chang’s action comedy Double Trouble, actress Charlie Yeung’s directorial debut Christmas Rose and Wong Jing’s gangster drama The Last Tycoon, starring Chow Yun-fat.
