Fortissimo Films has acquired all rights outside North America to David Gelb’s food-themed documentary feature Jiro Dreams Of Sushi.
The film revolves around 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono who runs the Michelin-starred restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro, located in the basement of a Tokyo office building. It also features his son, Yoshikazu, as he faces the pressure of stepping into his father’s shoes.
“Ever since my first trip to Tokyo at an early age I was fascinated by the taste, the ritual, and, most of all, the knife wielding master behind the bar,” said Gelb. “More than 20 years later, to be filming and spending time with the world’s greatest sushi chef, a true living legend, is literally a dream come true.”
The film is also produced by Gelb and executive produced by Matthew Weaver and Tom Pellegrini, Parlay Media’s Kevin Iwashina and Ross Dinerstein and Sundial Pictures’ Stefan Nowicki and Joey Carey. Iwashina is handling North American distribution rights with fellow producer Weaver.
The deal was completed by Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner and senior vice president, sales & acquisitions Winnie Lau and Kevin Iwashina of IP Advisors on behalf of the producers.
