India has been selected as the guest country at the next edition of the Cannes film festival, which takes place May 15-26, 2013.

The news was announced by Christian Jeune, director of the Film Department and deputy general delegate of the Cannes film festival, at Film Bazaar in Goa, which wrapped on Saturday night (Nov 24).

India will be the third guest country following Egypt in 2011 and Brazil this year.

The guest country selection coincides with the centennial of Indian cinema, and Jeune said Cannes will welcome a large delegation from the Indian film industry to celebrate the anniversary.

“The Festival de Cannes is delighted to celebrate one of the most important countries in the world of cinema, a country with a prestigious history and tradition, one whose current day and creative impulses are a perennial example of vitality,” said Jeune.

Exact details of the celebrations will be announced at a later date.
