WEG India sales chief Avinaash Jumani has launched a new company, PictureWorks, to acquire world cinema content for India and produce and sell Bollywood films.

On the acquisitions side, PictureWorks is looking for quality English and foreign-language features and is aiming to acquire 15-20 titles a year.

The company has already acquired all Indian rights to two films — Luc Vinciguerra’s animation Santa Apprentice and Dermot Mulroney’s Love, Wedding, Marriage, starring Kellan Lutz and Mandy Moore.

On the production side, the company is also developing two projects – a Hindi-language romantic comedy that is scheduled to start shooting at the end of the year, and an English-language project. PictureWorks will also be exploring international co-productions.

Several other Indian companies have tried importing world cinema titles into India with mixed results. “I feel there is potential for this type of cinema in India, especially with the rise of  multiplexes, but nobody is tapping it properly,” Jumani says.
