Details of the first edition of Talent Campus Tokyo were announced today by the event’s Berlin and Tokyo organising committees.

The first edition of Talent Campus Tokyo will be held from Nov 21-26, concurrent with the 12th edition of Tokyo Filmex (Nov 19-27).

In cooperation with the original Berlinale Talent Campus, the event is being co-organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo Culture Creation Project and Tokyo Filmex organizing committee. Additionally, Berlin is one of Tokyo’s 11 sister cities enabling further support.

Following Berlin’s template, Talent Campus Tokyo will focus on fostering young East and Southeast Asian filmmakers. The application period will commence on June 1 and run until June 30 with a dedicated website opening imminently. 12 to 15 applicants will be selected, comprising both directors and producers from across the continent.

The event’s workshops, masterclasses and panel discussions are set to be held at Tokyo Filmex’s main venue in Yurakucho and other locations.

The initiative has its origins in Tokyo Filmex’s Next Masters programme, launched in 2010 with a similar mandate. Berlin talent campus manager Matthijs Wouter Knol served as a project mentor along with director Hou Hsiao-hsien, British producer Simon Field, and Memento Films rep Emilie Georges. The rebranding is expected to bring the event more attention.
