Director of ‘71 to be showcased at New York and Los Angeles events.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced Yann Demange as the next filmmaker to take part in its Brits to Watch initiative.

The scheme, which launched last year in partnership with the British Council, introduces British talent to the US film industry. BAFTA then arranges follow-up meetings with key industry figures.

Four-time BAFTA nominated Demange will be present at a screening of his debut feature ’71 on Aug 27 in New York and Sept 2 in Los Angeles.

’71 received its world premiere at the Berlinale in February. Set amid the Troubles of 1971 Belfast, the film follows young British soldier (Jack O’Connell) over a single night after he is accidentally abandoned by his unit in the wake of a riot.

Roadside Attractions will release ’71 in the US in early 2015.   

BAFTA chief executive Amanda Berry said: “I am thrilled that Yann Demange, a truly talented director who has been BAFTA-nominated several times for his television work, will receive this international showcase for ’71, his first feature film.”

Clio Barnard, director of The Selfish Giant, was the first to take part in the Brits to Watch series last year.
