Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, was seen by 2.4 million viewers on its US premiere.

The TV movie, which received its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, was HBO’s biggest audience for an original movie since medical drama Something the Lord Made in 2004, according to Neilsen figures.

An additional 1.1 million people watched a repeat that was broadcast immediately after the premiere on Sunday [May 26].

The film will be released in UK cinemas on June 7 by eOne.

The story is based on the memoir of Scott Thorson, who had a secret five-year affair with the virtuoso pianist and entertainer.
